Shear Bond Strength of Metallic and Ceramic Brackets Bonded with Two-step and Three-step Light Cure Adhesives
Authors
Abstract:
Background and purpose: The bonding process is highly important in orthodontic treatment for its fast speed. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of ceramic and metallic brackets between three stage (transbondTM XT) and two stage (GC ortho connectTM) light cure composites. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, 80 maxillary and mandibular first and second premolar teeth, extracted for the purpose of orthodontic treatment, were randomly divided into four groups (n=20 per group). All teeth were etched using 35% phosphoric acid. They were then bonded with metallic brackets with GC ortho connectTM composite (group I), and TransbondTM XT composite (group II), and ceramic brackets with GC ortho connectTM composite (group III) and TransbondTM XT composite (group IV). The shear bond strength of the brackets was measured by universal testing machine 24 hours after thermocycling and mounting procedures. The amount of resin remained on the tooth surface was determined by stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed by SPSS V22 applying Kruskal–Wallis one-way analysis of variance. Results: The average shear bond strength in groups I, II, III, and IV were 18.71±1.99, 19.82±8.75, 18.4±5.78, and 18.5±52.42 MPa, indicating no significant differences between the groups studied (P> 0.05). Also, we found no significant differences in adhesive remnant index (ARI) between all groups (P=0.641). Conclusion: The shear bond strength of GC ortho connectTM composite was similar to that of the TransbondTM XT composite in both metallic and ceramic brackets. Therefore, GC ortho connectTM can serve as a substitute for TransbondTM XT.

Comparison of shear bond strength of stainless steel brackets bonded with three light- cured adhesives
Introduction: The bonding process of the brackets to enamel has been a critical issue in orthodontic research. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of 3 light-cured adhesives (transbond XT, Z250, light bond). Materials &Methods: In this study sixty extracted human premolars were collected and randomly divided into 3 test groups. All teeth were etched by 37% phosp...

Introduction: In orthodontic treatment, it is essential to establish a satisfactory bond between enamel and bracket. After the self-etch primers (SEPs) were introduced for the facilitation of bracket bonding in comparison to the conventional etch-and-bond system, multiple studies have been carried out on their shear bond strengths which have yielded different results. This study was aimed at co...

INTRODUCTION Adult patients typically require high-quality orthodontic treatment for ceramic brackets, but some clinicians remain concerned about the bond strength of these brackets. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the shear bond strength and de-bonding characteristics of metallic and ceramic brackets bonded with two types of bonding agents. METHODS In an experimental study ...

OBJECTIVE To determine the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets using color change adhesives that are supposed to aid in removing excess of bonding material and compare them to a traditional adhesive. METHODS Ninety metallic and ninety ceramic brackets were bonded to bovine incisors using two color change adhesives and a regular one. A tensile stress was applied by a universal testing ...

The aims of this study were to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal and ceramic brackets bonded to two different all-ceramic crowns, IPS Empress 2 and In-Ceram Alumina, to compare the SBS between hydrofluoric acid (HFA), phosphoric acid etched, and sandblasted, non-etched all-ceramic surfaces. Ninety-six all-ceramic crowns were fabricated resembling a maxillary left first premolar. T...

This study was conducted to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of various ceramic bracket base designs bonded to glazed aluminous (Vitadur Alpha) and fluorapatite (IPS e.max Ceram) ceramics, to examine the mode of failure, and to determine the debonding characteristics of the brackets and the ceramic surfaces after bond failure. Forty ceramic discs (15 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm thick) of ea...
